Dozens of New Yorkers Arrested in Welfare Fraud Crackdown

In Syracuse, New York, about 80 people have been arrested for committing welfare fraud. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal the 80 offenders were pulled from Onondaga, Oswego, Oneida counties on Wednesday. Most of these fraudulent welfare recipients were able to swindle taxpayers out of thousands of dollars. Investigators believe that in total the offenders were able to obtain more than $850,000 in public benefits.

One woman was arrested for stealing more than $70,000 in public assistance benefits. She worked for a bus company and was using this stolen money to pad her life in comfort and compensate for the lack of finances from her occupation. Officials say that more arrests are expected in the near future. Most of the offenders were taken into custody after pre-dawn raids in the area.
