Information on the Village of Garden City
Garden City is actually a village within the town of Hempstead which is
in Nassau County, NY with a population of 22,396 people. The United States
Census Bureau reports that the village is comprised of a total area of
5.3 square mile, all of which is land. It was originally founded by Alexander
Turney Stewart, who was a millionaire from Scotland looking to create
an upscale community for New Yorkers to live in. This area continues to
be an upscale community in present day with a healthy economy. Back then,
the prized attraction in this small community was the grand Garden City
Hotel by the notable design firm McKin, Mead & White. Later on in
1893, the Garden City Company was founded by the heirs of Alexander Stewart
and they decided to donate four acres of their land that rested beside
the Mineola train station. That land was used to build the county buildings
in the present day Mineola village.
In 1915, Garden City village then merged with a nearby village called Garden
City Estates and the incorporated villages really began to develop their
surrounding cities as well. It wasn't until the 1920s that the population
really began to grow and the city expanded by building more houses. This
expansion came to a halt after the stock market crash of 1929, but regained
momentum with a population boom in the 1930s. The historic Garden City
Hotel eventually went bankrupt and was demolished in the 1970s, but a
new Garden City Hotel has since been built in its place.
Several momentous events happened in the small village of Garden City.
One of the more notable events being when Charles Lindbergh departed for
his infamous solo transatlantic flight in 1927 from the Roosevelt Field
which is located in East Garden City. The village has its own school district
comprised of seven different schools; however, the primary school act
as one single unit and are spread out on three different campuses throughout
the village. The demographic of Garden City is predominantly white with
some Hispanic, Asian and African American residents. This small village
is also home to our criminal defense law firm where we continue to provide
aggressive criminal defense for all types of criminal charges.
