In Syracuse, New York, about 80 people have been arrested for committing
welfare fraud. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal the 80 offenders were
pulled from Onondaga, Oswego, Oneida counties on Wednesday. Most of these
fraudulent welfare recipients were able to swindle taxpayers out of thousands
of dollars. Investigators believe that in total the offenders were able
to obtain more than $850,000 in public benefits.
One woman was arrested for stealing more than $70,000 in public assistance
benefits. She worked for a bus company and was using this stolen money
to pad her life in comfort and compensate for the lack of finances from
her occupation. Officials say that more arrests are expected in the near
future. Most of the offenders were taken into custody after pre-dawn raids
in the area.
